The Luckiest, Unlucky Dog
Our vacation started out like any other. Packing our items, making
sure we had everything we needed and everything our dogs needed. We went on our
vacation for our anniversary and to spend some time with our friends, and their
dog. Those days went by and were amazing, the weather was nice, we did some
fishing, and some hiking into the trains on the Allagash Water Way. We were on
our way home out of the North Maine Woods, when we decided we were going to
stop for lunch and do a little bit of fly fishing. Roxy was tired from the past
days events and playing with her friend. She kept walking up and down the between
all of us. She wasn’t the biggest fan of the big log trucks going over the
bridge, as we continued watching everyone fish and enjoy being out, Roxy was at
the end of the line with our friend wandering in and out of the water. We asked
where she was, and he looked up and she was gone. We started hollering for her
and not seeing her, we walked further down, and started looking in the bushes
to no avail. There were some campers just up from where we were, and she was
not there either. We started to become very worried, and after about five hours
we had decided to call it and head out of the woods, with what would be the
worst feeling ever, leaving our baby behind. We had talked to a very helpful
forest ranger, who was going to put the word out to keep an eye out for we talked
to the people who were staying in that group of campers and gave them our phone
number we also talked to the people who work at the gate as well.
The following day we had a large amount of people looking
for her, and calling we split up and were looking in different directions along
with looking for any tracks or any signs of where she could have been. Our new
friend the Forest Ranger, had also taken the time to come out and help us look.
Though we once again came out of the woods empty handed. This process continued
for many days and those days started to turn into one week, and someone had
told the forest ranger that they thought they had seen her, though we still
were unable to find her, so again another week had gone by with no Roxy. We
were starting to try and move on, and get our house back to a new normal, of
not having a dog underfoot, or to wake you up because of how loud she was
snoring. We picked her things up around the house and were getting ready to
pack them away from good.
Though the day after two weeks of her being gone I had texted
my husband to buy a tote to pack up her items. I was working that evening, when
my husband calls work, and tells me hey the guys at the campers called, Roxy was
seen walking through the camp yard. He went and met his parents and they were into
the woods to find her. They were unable to find her, though they left some food
and a shirt, and when they went for a drive to drive around when they got back
the plate of food was gone. My husband and his parents came out of the woods
that night, and us knowing she was ok she was alive, and now we just needed to get
a hold of her.
On Saturday, my husband went in there with the plan to sit
there all day and to make some yummy bacon to see if he could cox her around.
He also talked to the guys at the campers as well. During that time, he was
again unable to find her. Though he was able to see that she had beaten down a
trail of her walking to and from the campers. He did set a cage like trap for
her, and knowing Roxy loves her kennel it would not be to intimidating we
hoped. I had gotten home from work and was winding down for the night and to
get ready for bed when I get a call at about 11:45PM. Its my husband and he says
to me, the guys in the camper just called she’s in the trap, and they were
going to get her. I knew it would take them a while to get up into the woods
get her and bring her home. So they would probably be home around 2AM, but I
couldn’t believe what was going on, and that she was going to come home. She
was very skittish and worry of when they went to get her, she is also very
skinny. I began to move her things back out of the spare bedroom. I didn’t really
know who to talk to or tell because it was so late at night though luckily for
me my sister works late like me so I was able to talk to her and her boyfriend while
I waited for her so finally arrive home.
When she was finally home, she was happy tail wagging, and knew she was safe. We had some cuddles some food to eat, took a couple of pictures, and posted them to Facebook so our friends and family who helped us through all of this would know she was finally home where she belongs. Now its our job to help her get back to feeling safe, get her to the vet soon, and mostly fatten her back up.
A very big thank you to our friends and family for putting
up with us and dealing with our moodiness during this whole thing, we love you
all and would not have made it through this without you. A very large thank you
to those who took the time to go in the woods and look for her, and for those gentlemen
at the camper who let us know she was there, and who let us know she was in the
trap she wouldn’t be home without your help.
THANK YOU!!
